Cup final will split Tshwane

May 7, 2012 | Sports Staff | 47 comments

SUPERSPORT United yesterday set up a Tshwane derby against Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup final on May 26 after their 3-0 win over AmaZulu at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

The final - to be played at Orlando Stadium - will be the first for United since 2005

Goals by David Nkoana, Kermit Erasmus and veteran Sibusiso Zuma made short work of Usuthu in the semifinal.

Nkoana's goal was a mere tap-in following Erasmus's hard work on the flank.

Nkoana then turned provider for Erasmus for the second SuperSport goal, in the 75th minute. His shot was saved by AmaZulu goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini, but Erasmus was on hand to score on the rebound.

Zuma came off the bench to make it 3-0 with a well-worked individual goal in the 88th minute.

The final - to be played at Orlando Stadium - will be the first for United since 2005 when they beat Wits in the same competition, but under a different sponsor.

The final will be a first for United coach Gavin Hunt, who took over from Pitso Mosimane in 2007.

Though United dominated local football from 2008 until 2010 with three consecutive Absa Premiership titles, Hunt has failed to guide them this far in the cup competitions.

Yesterday was a milestone for the coach and his team. They believe they can beat Sundowns, who are also in a rare cup final spot.

Sundowns comfortably beat Free State Stars in the earlier semifinal match on Saturday night, winning 2-0 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Yesterday's match could have turned out differently if AmaZulu's Siyabonga Vilane had capitalised on a chance in the second minute. Instead, he struck the woodwork.

United also have goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, striker-turned-defender Glen Salmon and Thabo September to thank.

Williams made some outstanding saves to keep United in the lead following shots from the two Dlaminis - Goodman and Ayanda.

Salmon, in the absence of United skipper Morgan Gould, slotted in to the defence and did a sterling job with September.

United are still in with a chance of clinching the league title, as are Sundowns. The two will meet on May 12 in the league.

Usuthu were cup finalists in 2010, losing to Wits at Soccer City.

A team that has failed to win any cup except for the league; can not claim to have dominated local football; unless the other tournaments do not count or were not on offer for that period. Whilst it is every coaches dream to win the league for a number of reasons, it must be noted that if that is all the team wins then they have not dominated anything, if they failed to win the rest of the trophies that were on offer.
I wish both both supersport and sundowns well in the final, may the best team win.

Sanity should prevail, we can't have Tswane darby in Soweto, as people of Pretoria we want to economically grow our people, This Game should be a thank you to all Tswane people for supporting the teams this far, so it make sense that the cup final should be in Pretoria, can you imagine the benefits the hotels and B&B could have, the hawkers at the stadium, PSL & Nrdbank must use their head and not to be gready, I call on them to respect us the supporters and the Pretoria communities, This game should be at Pretoria not Orlando.
