Nigeria-Bafana friendly must wait
THE proposed international game between Bafana Bafana and the Super Eagles of Nigeria can happen only after the two opening 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.
Speaking to Avusa Media yesterday, Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane said he was happy to hear there were talks to get the match between the two African giants back on track.
The match was initially scheduled for February but was postponed indefinitely to allow Nigeria to prepare adequately for their opening 2013 Afcon qualifier against Rwanda in Kigali. The match ended in a goalless draw.
Safa sources have confirmed that the federations of Safa and Nigeria were involved in talks to have the game played in South Africa.
"I'm not involved in the negotiations but will be happy to play against Nigeria. We need to play against the countries in the top 10 in Africa," Mosimane said.
"We have played against Ghana, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Zambia and Senegal.
"I would love to play against countries in the top 10 by the time we start with the 2013 Afcon finals.
"Nigeria is one of them but I'm not sure about the date. What I can tell you is that it won't happen in between the two World Cup qualifiers against Ethiopia and Botswana.
"Hopefully after the Botswana game but we will be guided by the federation."
- Bafana Bafana host Ethiopia in the opening match on June 3 at a venue still to be determined with Safa and Royal Bafokeng Sport still in talks to have it played in Phokeng.
Avusa Media has learnt that Safa has asked for around R4 million, a figure that Royal Bafokeng feels is too much for a game of this nature.
