Spurs aim for playoffs

UPWARDS: Spurs' Thabo Moroape
UPWARDS: Spurs' Thabo Moroape

AFTER spending the better part of the season at the bottom of the National First Division log, Witbank Spurs' general manager Thabo Moroape said they are now targeting a play-offs berth.

The Spurs have moved from 14th spot to 10th in the standings, following their vital 2-1 win over foe Mpumalanga Black Aces at Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday.

Spurs have collected 25 points from 23 matches and are left with seven matches to round up their campaign.

Moroape said they needed to collect at least 15 points from their remaining matches in order to steal fourth place, but this will only be possible if the clubs above them drop points.

"Following our recent good display we remain confident that we will sneak through to the playoffs," Moroape said. "The boys have showed a lot of discipline, commitment and maturity, hence we have shifted our target from avoiding relegation to qualifying for the playoffs. We will not put a lot of pressure on the boys to qualify for the playoffs, but their current form suggests that they can attain this feat. We will continue to respect our opponents and take each game as it comes, but things are really promising in the team."

In other results AmaTuks were held to a goalless draw by FC AK at LC de Villiers Stadium.

The rest of the weekend's results are:

Chippa United 5, Atlie FC 1; African Warriors 3, Dynamos 1; Sivutsa Stars 2, United FC 2; Vasco da Gama 3, Carara Kicks 1; FC Cape Town 1, Rovers 0; Spurs 2, Aces 1; and AmaTuks 0, FC AK 0.
