Ailing Cosmos see off Stars

BASEMENT side Jomo Cosmos clawed their way back into the game after defender El-Hadji Samb grabbed a late equaliser in extra-time to send the game into penalties, eventually wining the shootout 4-3, in this Nedbank Cup last-16 match.

Goalkeeper Avril Phali denied Mduduzi Nyanda and Elias Ngwepe of Platinum Stars by making two brilliant saves, while Cosmos' Katlego Loke, Sello Matete, Mark Haskins and Themba Shabalala converted theirs.

A stunning free kick from Patrick Malokase in the 97th minute had almost proved to be the winning goal for Stars, but Samb had other ideas.

During the penalty shoot-out, Malokase, S'busiso Msomi, and Vuyo Mere scored for Stars.

Stars were favourites to win this match, and they started with enough determination to confirm this, but could not convert their chances early on.

Cosmos's veteran striker Alton Meiring, who has only managed two league goals this season, missed several scoring opportunities .

Stars were not clinical either in front of goal. Until Malokase came on, they only attempted to score from set pieces and long-range shots.

Cosmos now have their names in the quarterfinals hat for this morning's draw.

They join Free State Stars, Santos, Maritzburg United, Amazulu, Kaizer Chiefs, SuperSport United and Mamelodi Sundowns - all tougher draws compared to facing Stars.

l SuperSport United also triumphed in their last-16 match yesterday, beating National First Division side United FC 1-0 at GKW Stadium in Kimberly.

The goal was scored by Ashley Hartog 10 minutes from the break.
