European clubs keep an eye on tough Masalesa

RISING Bidvest Wits midfielder Lehlogonolo Masalesa has attracted interest from Europe as the Absa Premiership season nears its end.

Known to many of his close associates as Vieira - after the former French international Patrick Vieira, because of his powerful play - the 20-year-old Masalesa is reported to be under the microscope of clubs from Belgium and France.

The player from Mankweng in Limpopo is one of the ever-growing list of youngsters from the Africa Youth Sports Academy who are doing well in the Premier Soccer League.

Other successful graduates include Oupa Manyisa (Orlando Pirates), Joseph Molangoana (Platinum Stars) and Patrick Phungwayo (Wits).

Mpho Makola and Ayanda Mtshali of Free State Stars, as well as Lwazi Skosana of Moroka Swallows, are from the same academy, which was started by former Bafana Bafana star Harold Legodi.

The academy's head coach, Dan "Dance" Malete, confirmed that Masalesa was being monitored by European clubs after his five-star performances at Wits this season.

"Vieira is now on the lips of many people who are passionate about the beautiful game. He has been winning man-of-the-match awards left, right and centre," said Malete.

"All that I can tell you is that we are talking to some teams in Europe who are enquiring about him, it's a great development for our academy.

"We are also grateful to Bidvest Wits coach Roger de Sa for giving Vieira a platform to shine."

Masalesa, who could not be reached for comment, moved to Wits after he was off-loaded by Platinum Stars.

He is also rated highly by Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane, who has selected him and described him as one of the country's future stars.
