THE City of Johannesburg has been awarded the right to host the 2013 World Anti-Doping Conference, it was announced yesterday.
This is major boost for Minister of Sport Fikile Mbalula, who will be elected to serve on the World Anti-Doping Agency executive in Canada next month.
Mbalula and Johannesburg mayor Parks Tau will attend the signing of the memorandum of understanding for the conference in Sandton on March 22.
"We will use the conference to demonstrate our ability to host major global events with aplomb like we did with the 2010 World Cup," said Mbalula. "We walk the talk in sport and recreation in promoting the natural talent of our athletes as well as discouraging them from using banned substances."
Mbalula competed in the Argus Cycle race in Cape Town last Sunday along with Western Cape premier Helen Zille in support of the "I Play Fair" campaign.
The SA Institute for Drug-free Sport introduced the campaign to curb and discourage the use of performance-enhancing substances in all sports codes. Other celebrities who competed included Raymond Hack, Zackie Achmat, Mark Fish and Bokang Montjane. " I feel great to have finished the race under five hours," said Mbalula, who also commended the race volunteers.
