Stars out to ground Birds

FREE State Stars have warned visitors Moroka Swallows that they will return home from Namahadi with their wings clipped after their Absa Premiership clash at Charles Mopeli Stadium tonight.

"Swallows will go back to Gauteng empty-handed," said Stars general manager Rantsi Mokoena yesterday, ahead of their 7.30pm clash.

"It is unfortunate Swallows are coming to QwaQwa at a time when we are in a mean mood. Their wings will be clipped after the match and we have the potential in the team to do this, though it will not be an easy match."

Ea Lla Koto go into this clash high on confidence after their impressive 4-1 win over National First Division side Sivutsa Stars in the last-32 stage of the Nedbank Cup at the weekend.

The Birds, on the other hand, are wounded after they exited the tournament thanks to a 1-0 setback against fellow Premiership campaigners Bidvest Wits. Swallows, however, will draw inspiration tonight from their 2-1 win over Stars in the first round.

"Now that we are out of the Nedbank Cup, we will channel all our energies into the league," said Swallows brand manager Siya Sangweni. "We are confident we will beat Stars again."

The spotlight in this game is expected to fall on two strikers - Edward "Dlokoloza" Manqele of Stars and Siyabonga "Bhele" Nomvethe of Swallows.

Nomvethe has rattled the net nine times in the league and Manqele six.

Meanwhile, Platinum Stars hope to sustain their winning momentum at the expense of Lamontville Golden Arrows tonight despite the suspension of coach Owen da Gama.

It will be the first match for caretaker coaches Cavann "Braso" Johnson and Allan Freeze.

The match will be played at Moruleng Stadium near Sun City (7.30pm kickoff).
