Powerlines FC are humiliated

BIG spenders Mamelodi Sundowns more than dimmed the lights on SAB Regional League side Powerlines FC's Nedbank Cup dream with an easy 24-0 win at Kimberley Stadium yesterday.

The Brazilians showed professionalism, with no showboating throughout the match though they were 10 goals up by half time.

The Tshwane side had six different scorers on the day, a rugby score line which GWK Stadium regulars are used to.

Nyasha Mushekwi scored six goals before being substituted by Lebohang "Cheese" Mokoena late in the second half.

Hlompho Kekana, who had opened the scoring for Sundowns as early as the eighth minute, clinically netting seven goals.

Kimberley home boy Richard "Kimberley Express" Henyekane also put five goals past Powerlines FC goalkeeper Thabang Louw, who was let down by his defence, did make a few saves to prevent the score line from reaching a half century.

Samuel Julies came off the bench for Sundowns to score two goals and then spending the better part of the second half trying for a hat-trick.

Elias Pelembe was more of a provider in the first half of this cup encounter, and in the second half he got two of his own.

Mokoena himself scored two goals minutes after replacing Mushekwi.

This was a record score line in a cup competition of this format.

In 1976, AmaZulu thumped Bizana All Stars 16 -0, the record Sundowns smashed yesterday.

In Ermelo, SuperSport United defeated Vodacom League side Batau FC 4-2 on penalties to qualify for the last 16 round.

l Black Leopards defied the odds by defeating Zimbabwe's Motor Action 2-0 at Rufaro Stadium in Harare yesterday to book themselves a place in the CAF Confederation Cup first round, writes Ramatsiyi Moholoa.

The two sides played to a 1-1 draw in the first round clash of this preliminary round at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane two weeks ago.

Leopards are the only South African side remaining in continental club competitions after Orlando Pirates crashed out of the African Champions League.

Striker Thabo Mongalo scored both goals for Leopards.

"I'm so happy we are through to the next round," said Leopards boss David Thidiela.
