Why the Iron Duke shed tears for Zodwa
ORLANDO Pirates chairman Irvin "Iron Duke" Khoza has opened his heart to explain why he shed a tear at the club's 75th anniversary gala dinner at the Sandton Convention Centre on Saturday night.
He cried because his late daughter Zodwa was not part of the celebration.
"It was very emotional for me," said Khoza who could not contain his emotions and was seen wiping away tears as the male trio Afrotenor belted out Nessun Dorma, one of his favourite songs.
"After travelling such a long distance with all sorts of things happening in life, I was really touched at that time when they (Afrotenor) were singing the song.
"Zodwa was dedicated and selfless, she contributed immensely to the success of Pirates," he said. "I just wished she was with us, standing in front of the five trophies. When the whole thing about 'happy people' started, Zodwa was one of the people working to promote our brand. She served the club with aplomb, hence people are now happy.
"It was more about my daughter than me, but I must say I'm happy that my son Nkosana (the club's marketing director) is doing an equally great job."
Khoza junior was in charge of Saturday's event.
"It was teamwork. I worked with a lot of people and I'm happy the event was a roaring success," Nkosana said. "It was the first time I saw my dad shedding a tear at a celebratory event."
Besides the gala dinner, Pirates also hosted a star-studded golf day last week.
Some of the big names who took part included Kaizer Motaung, Mzwandile Petros, Dimistry Mogale, Jazzman Mahlakgane, Andre Mothibe and Vincent Williams.
