Pirates hijack Myeni sale
ORLANDO Pirates were set to pull the rug from under Mamelodi Sundowns yesterday in the race for exciting Wits winger Sifiso Myeni.
At the time of going to press, the Buccaneers were looking good to get their man, while the Brazilians were left dangling a four-and-a-half-year deal at Myeni.
While Sundowns official Trot Moloto said there were no current movements within the club except for Papi Zothwane's imminent flight to Bloemfontein Celtic, Bucs chairman Irvin Khoza had indicated at an earlier press conference that he had one more major signing to announce soon. Sowetan can confirm that that player is Myeni.
Khoza confirmed yesterday that discussions are close to being finalised.
"We have had very long and interesting discussions with his agent and I can confirm that these are progressing very well. We will make an announcement soon," the Pirates boss who is also chairman of the Premier Soccer League said yesterday.
He was surprised that Sowetan knew that he was signing Myeni.
The Buccaneers have shown their intention of sweeping the boards in local and continental competitions with the recent signing of Luis Boa Morte on an 18-month contract. Boa Morte is a former Portuguese international who played in the English Premier League for Arsenal, Fulham and West Ham.
George Mogotsi, a Wits board member, confirmed the interest in Myeni yesterday, saying it comes from the local big three, Pirates, Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs.
"We cannot stand in a player's way if the offer is good. We can only advise a player but the final decision is his. So far nothing has been confirmed but we expect anything to happen."
Myeni had initially rebuffed an approach from the mega-rich Downs last season, at a time when they were still searching for a head coach after letting acting coach Ian Gorowa go.
The decision by the player, who has one Bafana cap, came as a surprise.
"There is no coach there, so who is signing the players?" he asked at the time.
Now sources at the club have revealed that this time around Myeni was taken to a meeting arranged with current head coach Johan Neeskens.
At that meeting Myeni is said to have required a guarantee that he was being brought there to play and not to be a bench-warmer. He was apparently given that assurance by Neeskens but it seems Pirates will still win.

How bad do these teams want this boy? If I were his agent, I would ask for a R 500 000 salary and see exactly how bad they want him. If Pelembe can get that much this boy deserves that much too.Report Abuse
