Siyo guns for WBC youth belt

ONTO THE GLOBAL STAGE: Knockout specialist Luzuko Siyo
ONTO THE GLOBAL STAGE: Knockout specialist Luzuko Siyo

KNOCKOUT specialist Luzuko Siyo is gearing up for his first international bout.

Duncan Village-born Siyo, who relinquished his SA junior-flyweight title last week, will test his boxing skills when he faces Renan Quijano Trongco.

The fighters will trade leather in a battle for Trongco's World Boxing Council Youth Intercontinental junior flyweight crown at Emperor's Palace in Kempton Park on March 3. Siyo's clash with the Filipino boxer is on the undercard of the International Boxing Organisation minimumweight title contest between champion Hekkie Budler and Florante Condes.

Siyo's manager Dingaan Somtsora said: "We said it when we vacated the title last week that Luzuko was going to fight for a world title. We can now confirm that he's going to face Trongco from the Philippines on March 3."

Siyo earned his chance against the Filipino boxer after impressing Golden Gloves Promotions boss Rodney Berman during his clash with Sebelomzi Zimela last October. The 21-year-old pugilist took only 40 seconds to stop Zimela in his first defence of the SA title. Siyo has an impressive record of 10 wins (eight KOs) while the Filipino has 10 wins (seven KOs) and three losses. The 23-year-old southpaw stopped Sirisak Sitjarem in the second round in his last fight.

Meanwhile, Budler will make his first defence of the IBO crown when he squares up against Condes at Emperor's Palace. Budler won the IBO belt after a points victory over Michael Landaro at the Kempton Park venue last September. Condes lost to current IBF minimum- weight champion Nkosinathi Joyi in an elimination bout at East London's Orient Theatre more than two years ago.
