Supersport sneak into PSL Championship lead

Almost unobtrusively, three-times former Premier League champions SuperSport United sneaked into the lead in the current title race after beating a gallant Platinum Stars 2-0 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

While speculation has been rife these past few weeks whether popular clubs Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns or Orlando Pirates would occupy pole position, SuperSport have taken advantage of their main rivals dropping points at regular intervals to leap-frog  a point ahead of Chiefs in the championship race.

At the balmy, but relatively deserted Atteridgeville-based stadium, the M-Net owned club ensured earning the three valuable points via goals from Malawian international Atusaye Nyondo and cagey Kermit Erasmus within seven minutes midway through the second  half.

Up to this point there had been little between the teams, with both sides wilting in the face of the oppressive heat.

But there is nothing like scoring a couple of goals to act as a stimulating motivator and once SuperSport had taken the lead they never looked back.

The breakthrough for SuperSport followed a corner from Tebogo Langerman in the 61st minute and Nyondo was a wee bit lucky as he kneed the ball into the net from close range.

But there was little luck associated with Erasmus’s scoring effort as he darted down the left flank and then floated the ball into the far roof of the net  from an angled position.

Hapless Stars played with goalkeeper Jackson Mabokgwane limping almost throughout with a leg injury and they fell flat at the end to remain in 11th place in the log.

In contrast, exciting  SuperSport goalkeeping prospect Ronwen Williams looked a sprightly figure throughout and although he was required to do a minimal amount of work,  one breathtaking save in the 28th minute averted what seemed a certain Stars goal — which could have dramatically altered the course of the match.
