Is this the season for AmaTuks?

LIKE bright students, University of Pretoria are setting the pace early in the National First Division.

AmaTuks will be chasing their fourth successive win this season tonight, to maintain their perfect start to the 2011-12 campaign. They visit struggling newcomers Chippa United at Philippi Stadium in one of the two NFD fixtures tonight.

The Tshwane side are unbeaten in three matches after wins over Atlie FC (2-0), African Warriors (2-1) and Dynamos (3-0). They are gradually establishing themselves in the NFD.

It's not the first time AmaTuks have got off to a bright start, as history shows they have often been quick out of the blocks but slow finishers.

The departure of key players and poor finishing have conspired to derail an overdue promotion to the elite league over the past six seasons.

They once came within one match of gaining promotion to the top flight and two points away from going to the NFD play-offs for a second time.

Apart from reaching the Nedbank Cup final three seasons ago, Ama- Tuks have also been a greased conveyer belt of talent for elite league teams.

But this could be the season AmaTuks, who are looking inspired, finally morph from perennial also-rans into genuine promotion contenders. AmaTuks have signed former Amajita midfielder Philane Khwela from neighbours SuperSport United and Guinean international Seydouba Sounh from Ajax Cape Town on loan deals.
