Netball award is a special gift to Tata

ON MONDAY we witnessed the world celebrate Nelson Mandela International Day. It was a good moment in our lives, engaging in 67 minutes dedicated to goodwill and humanitarian work, in honour of and dedication to the life of an international icon, Tata Rolihlahla Nelson Mandela.

He is the champion of the oppressed, a selfless leader of the people. He is a champion of the poor, a cadre for peace and prosperity, a doyen of our struggle. We salute you Tata as you keep growing and becoming a living symbol of hope, peace and prosperity for many years to come.

We are blessed to have you. Happy birthday and many more returns. We will always pray to God to give us more years with Nelson Mandela among us. Ha a yo ya tshwanang le wena .

When our netball team left for Singapore we promised a birthday gift to uTata and Erin Burger was the toast of all internationally when she was voted the player of the tournament at the World Netball Championship. We dedicated the qualification to 2015 and Erin's crowning to Mandela.

As Sport and Recreation, this is the opening of Pandora's box for us, as more has to be done to ensure the sport of netball gets better support from the government and business. This is in honour of our living legend, Madiba.

Thank you to Spar and other sponsors for sticking with the team. We want to sit down with Netball SA's leadership at a strategic retreat to figure out how we can improve the status of the sport.

It is common knowledge that netball is one of the biggest sporting codes in the country. We need to look atthe issue of facilities to accommodate the sport, and take stock of it. This is a huge task.

We must also learn from other countries that have a professional structure with support, check how they do it and how we can follow suit. Once more congratulations for the great showing at the World Championships.

Now the future is taking us to New Zealand, carrying the hopes of the nation again with the Springboks.

With only weeks to go to this international event, IRB Rugby World Cup 2011, we call on all South Africans from all walks of life to show their colours through the Magnificent Friday campaign, dedicating our time to Bok Day.

As part of supporting our people in New Zealand, the government will be launching the eKhaya Project. This is a hospitality programme that uses sport to showcase the country internationally, among other objectives.

During this project we will host South African welcome and closing functions, in which it is expected that President Zuma will attend one of the events in New Zealand.

We will be bringing the razzmatazz to the people of the world in New Zealand, that's the South African culture.

We are the children and grandchildren of Nelson Mandela. Through South Africa Nights it will rain South African food, wines and the unique sounds of our country.

Sport and Recreation is a movement, a movement to unite and celebrate with our people.

United under the programme with the South African flag flying high, coupled with the successful play on the pitch through the gallant tackles and tries by the likes of John Smit, Victor Matfield, Morne Steyn, Tendai Mtawarira, Butch James, Bakkies Botha and others.

The Springboks have been one of the most successful outfits in the country and we need to give them more support as they fly the flag.

With the support of various departments like the Presidency, Arts and Culture, Trade and Industry, State Security, Home Affairs, Tourism and agencies such as the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee, International Marketing Council, South African Broadcasting Corporation and other important role players, South Africa is a winner.

We will be revealing all about the eKhaya Project - Home Away from Home - in a few days.

To the South African Rugby Union leadership, coach Pieter de Villiers and the technical team: the nation is behind you as one, SHOW DEM YOU ARE THE CHAMPS!

In closing, the razzmatazz of the Superbowl on August 21 has got the swag, join in and participate in voting for your favourite sports star of the year, and in a few days' time I will be issuing a statement about the Minister's Award for Excellence and Steve Tshwete Lifetime Awards nominees.

Watch the press for details.

Good luck to all our athletes and administrators as you walk that Legends Carpet.

  • Mbalula is the Minister of Sport and Recreation
