Siphiwe Tshabalala wins big in Gauteng awards

BAFANA Bafana vice captain Siphiwe Tshabalala last night scooped the biggest prize at the 2010 Gauteng Sports Awards.

Tshabalala won the sports personality of the year award, which was voted for by the public using cellphone text messages and on-line.

The Kaizer Chiefs star won the hearts of many South Africans after scoring the historic opening 2010 World Cup goal when Bafana played to a 1-1 draw with Mexico on June 11.

"This is a great honour. A big thank you to all the people who voted for me," said Tshabalala.

Soccer boss Irvin Khoza was also honoured for his sterling work in making the 2010 Fifa World Cup a success. He was presented with the Lifetime Achiever award .

The awards, held at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, were introduced by provincial MEC for sport Lebogang Maile to recognise the invaluable contribution made by athletes and administrators alike.

Khoza is credited with providing superb leadership as chairperson of the Local Organising Committee of the World Cup.

Presenting the Orlando Pirates boss with the award, Maile made it clear the government wanted to see Gauteng continuing to live up to its slogan "Home of Champions".

Cricketer Mignon de Preez was crowned sportswoman of the year, with swimmer Natalie Du Toit awarded the accolade in the disabled sportswoman of the year category.

Rugby star Gurthro Steenkamp got the sportsman of the year award, while Francois Hougaard, who was this week named for the World Cup squad won the newcomer of the year award.

Michelle Joubert (hockey) was presented with the technical official of the year award. Wheelchair tennis star Lucas Sithole won the disabled sportsman of the year award.

Vodacom Blue Bulls were named the team of the year.

Hein van der Lith was named the coach of the year for his incredible work in developing tourniquet and korfball, while Khaya Mjo got the administrator of the year accolade. Jozi FM reporter Tim Thema is the journalist of the year.

Project leader Thoko Phuthi said: "We are delighted to have put up such a magnificent show and thank MEC Maile and HOD Busi Mhaga for believing in our team."

Maile said: "We thank all the clubs, federations and community for making the awards a resounding success."
