IT WAS a bleak weekend for South African soccer after SuperSport United and BidVest Wits were bundled out of the CAF club competitions.
In Madagascar's capital Antananarivo yesterday, Adema beat Wits 2-0 in a game where the latter's coach, Roger de Sa, paid the price for taking an inexperienced side to the Indian Ocean islanders.
Adema qualified for the next round of the CAF Confederations Cup on a 3-1 aggregate score after playing to a 1-1 draw in Johannesburg in the first leg a fortnight ago.
On Saturday night at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, United were eliminated from the 2011 CAF Champions League despite beating Egyptian giants Al-Ahly 1-0 after the Mahomed Aboutreika-led Al-Ahly beat Matsatsantsa 2-0 in the first leg in Cairo two weeks ago.
Prior to their departure to Madagascar, De Sa said he was using this tournament to expose their youngsters to international football.
"I strongly believe that the youngsters came to the party but the match officials from Mauritius were biased," said Wits director George Mogotsi after the match.
Mogotsi's sentiments were echoed by Safa executive member Fanyana Sibanyoni, who went to Madagascar with Wits as head of delegation.
He said: "What I saw was appalling. It is not fair to assign referees from Mauritius to handle matches in Madagascar. Wits gave a good account of themselves."
Back to Polokwane, Jabulani Maluleke scored the only goal against the six-time Champions League winners on Saturday.
