Branco tries to keep enemies apart

SECURITY will be tight for the second instalment of the Branco Sports Production press conference at Carnival City on January 25.

That is because promoter Branco Milenkovic wants to make sure that there is no repeat of the brawl that erupted at his first press conference there on December 8.

Sworn enemies Daniel "Billy the Kid" Bruwer and Ruben "The Chosen One" Groenewald exchanged blows ahead of their fight at the Ekurhuleni casino's Big Top Arena on January 29.

Some feel the incident brought the sport of boxing into disrepute, while this writer saw it as a perfect strategy to sell their non- title cruiserweight eight- rounder.

Their brawl lasted a couple of seconds before the two boxers were separated by their handlers.

To avoid a similar occurrence Milenkovic announced that security personnel would be on high alert for his second media briefing.

"We cannot take chances this time after what happened there," Milenkovic said.

"I took things for granted at the first press conference because I was not aware that the animosity between Bruwer and Groenewald was that deep."

The two fighters were supposed to have sorted out their differences in a boxing ring last year.

They almost beat each other up at Nasrec where their weigh-in was supposed to take place, but that fight fell through.

Bruwer is trained by Nick Durandt while Groenewald is trained by Peter Smith.

IBF mini flyweight kingpin Nkosinathi Joyi will defend against mandatory challenger Katsunari Takayama of Japan in the main fight.
