Several clubs gun for Sibaya

BAFANA Bafana star midfielder MacBeth Sibaya, above, is humbled by the large number of clubs that are courting him as he ends an eight-year relationship with Russian champions Rubin Kazan tomorrow.

The 33-year-old, who would not immediately reveal the names of the clubs that are after his signature yesterday, feels he has overstayed his welcome at Rubin Kazan.

Sibaya leaves a club where he established himself as one of the trusty players.

"I have several offers on the table. I have been relaxing here at home with my family while my agent is dealing with the interested clubs," Sibaya said yesterday.

Sibaya, who is from Durban, said he wanted to move to another top club in Europe.

His contract with Rubin Kazan expires tomorrow.

"I have already informed Rubin Kazan management that I will not be renewing the contract and there is no bad feelings between me and the management of the club. They have been very nice to me all these years and we are parting ways amicably," he said.

He continued: "I feel I can play for another three to four years in a top league in Europe.

"I won many titles with Rubin Kazan, which was the best experience and achievement for me since I started playing soccer at the professional level.

"There are no challenges for me anymore at Rubin Kazan and that is why I have decided to move on. I'm hoping to get a new club in the next few days."

Besides the league, Sibaya also won the Russian Super Cup and Commonwealth of Independent States Cup with the Russian giants this season.

He was one of the South African players who featured in the Uefa Champions League this season along with Tsepo Masilela and Bevan Fransmann.

Highly rated by Spain and Barcelona superstar Xavi Hernandez, Sibaya said he will meet his agent tomorrow to start discussions about his new home in the new year.

Sibaya cut his teeth in the professional ranks at Jomo Cosmos between 1999 and 2002.

He also played for Amajita and the Under-23 squads.

In 2002, he joined Rosenborg in Norway but spent only one season before he was snapped up by Rubin Kazan.
