GGP creates award in honour of Pettifer

IN HONOUR of Golden Gloves Promotions publicist Terry Pettifer, promoter Rodney Berman announced yesterday that his company has created the Terry Pettifer Prospect of the Year Award.

Berman made it clear that the recipient of the award will not necessarily be a Golden Gloves fighter but a boxer chosen by a panel of boxing experts from around the country.

"The winner must have less than 10 fights but more than six," Berman said.

The panel of judges will comprise SuperSport and SABC soccer and boxing television hosts Phumlani Msibi and Koena "Kwenaldo" Moabelo, journalist Khulani Nkuna and yours truly.

"You guys get to see all the fights and you will do a good job in selecting the winner," said Berman, adding that the award would carry a R25000 prize.

"We will invest it for that individual on a five-year, tax-free bond. We will introduce the award next year but the panel must start searching now. The ceremony will take place annually on November 26, the day Terry died," he said.

lBrian Mitchell has taken over as Golden Gloves publicist. Mitchell, who fought most of his distinguished career at Golden Gloves, described Berman's move as a gesture to keep the name of "Terrible Terence" alive.

Mitchell, the former IBF and WBA world champion, doubles as boxing commentator for SuperSport. He also manages fighters who include newly crowned South African light heavyweight champion Johnny "The Hurricane" Muller and 2009 Boxing SA Prospect of the Year Florante "Demolition Man" Simba.

Pettifer, 59, died at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and was cremated on Monday.

lBerman extended his condolences to the family of late boxing promoter Joe Gumede, 80, who died on Wednesday.
