Seize moment, Kirsten tells Banyana

SAFA has praised Banyana Banyana for reaching the seventh African Women's Championship.

At the same time, Safa president Kirsten Nematandani commended Bafana Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena after he was honoured with the Freedom of London.

Banyana take on defending champions Equatorial Guinea in the second semifinal at Sinaba Stadium in Daveyton tomorrow at 3.30pm. Seven-time African queens the Super Falcons of Nigeria meet Cameroon in the first semifinal at the same venue at 10.30pm.

The four countries were in the semifinals of the same tournament in Malabo in 2008, but the fixtures are now different. During that tournament, host country Equatorial Guinea beat Banyana 2-1 in the final. The winners of the two matches will qualify for the 2011 Fifa Women's World Cup.

"We are saying to our girls, seize the moment," Nematandani said. Cameroon must tighten up their rearguard ahead of their semifinal match against Nigeria to avoid being hammered with an avalanche of goals.

This became apparent when Cameroon narrowly pipped Algeria 2-1 in the last game of the Group B match at Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa on Monday.

Algeria exposed Cameroon's weakness as they easily unlocked them in their own danger zone and hit the woodwork three times.
