BLOEMFONTEIN Celtic dethroned Kaizer Chiefs as the Mangaung African Cultural Festival champions yesterday.

Celtic defeated Chiefs 5-4 on aggregate after penalty shoot-out at Free State Stadium. They were level 1-1 at full-time. Prince Olomu and Kaizer Motaung Junior scored for either sides.

The victory was a sweet revenge for Celtic, whose supporters celebrated wildly at the 45000 capacity stadium. Olomu broke Amakhosi's resistance when he netted in the 12th minute after pouncing on a rebound from Benett Chenene.

The Nigerian midfielder fired a grass-cutter past Chiefs goalkeeper Arthur Bartman, who remained rooted to the ground as the ball hit the back of the net.

Chiefs immediately raised the tempo of the game, initiating neat scoring opportunities in search of the equaliser.

The best scoring chances fell on George Lebese and José Torrealba, who missed a penalty awarded after Celtic goalie Patrick Tignyemb had brought down Lebese inside the box.

Kaizer Motaung Jnr, who captained Amakhosi, led by example when he levelled matters in the 44th minute after receiving a through-pass from Mthokozisi Yende.

Determined to scoop the cup, the two arch-rivals returned from the interval firing from all cylinders in search of the killer goal. But the strikers of both teams lacked the finishing touches.

There was nothing special in the second stanza although both teams made changes.

This was the first time the winner was decided on penalties. It was also the first time Celtic beat Chiefs since the inception of the Macufe Cup tournament seven years ago.
