Fans in no hurry for Derby tickets

Sep 10, 2010 | Mogomotsi Selebi | 18 comments

TICKET sales for tomorrow night's Soweto derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have been uncharacteristically slow.

These two traditional rivals face off in the first leg of the MTN8 semifinal at Soccer City but by close of business yesterday only 45000 tickets had been sold.

A total of 78000 tickets will be sold for the match, while 10000 will be reserved for suites. This means that 88000 tickets will be up for sale.

Normally, tickets for matches featuring the South African football giants are sold out early in the week leading up to the match, but it has been different this time around.

But Pirates communications manager Mickey Modisane is not losing any sleep over it.

He insisted yesterday that the match was too important not to be played to a full house.

"We are definitely not worried about the slow response from supporters. Ideally, we would have preferred that all tickets were sold at this stage, but there were midweek games where both ourselves and Kaizer Chiefs were involved.

"Our focus was obviously on the midweek matches and now that those are out of the way, I'm confident people will go out in their numbers to buy tickets and the stadium will be full on Saturday," Modisane said. He also revealed that there are seating arrangements for both teams and that as the host team it was important that The Ghost were visible in the grandstands.

"We simply have to turn out in numbers to show that it is our home game. We have to dominate Chiefs both on and off the field. The western and southern stands have been reserved for our supporters, while the eastern and western stands are for Chiefs fans," Modisane said.

What happened to our Pro. Has he been promised a boot. He has been very quite all the time? Is this little appearance some sort of adding value to him? So he can say something?
