Mweene in confident mood for clash with Pirates

Sep 8, 2010 | Linda Moreotsene | 3 comments

NEWLY appointed Free State Stars captain Kennedy Mweene is not overly worried about Orlando Pirates, whom they meet at the Soccer Stadium tonight.

We are looking good and we go to Pirates looking for a win

Mweene reckons in spite of the adjustments they have had to undergo, enough time has passed for the team to be cohesive and competitive.

"We are looking good and we go to Pirates looking for a win. After our draw with Santos, we need the points badly," the goalkeeper said.

Mweene is not bothered by the fact his coach Sunday Marimo Chidzambga has just one game under his belt, while Pirates coach Rudi Krol has no such problems.

It is fair to say that in his preparations leading to tonight's match Chidzambga pondered how his charges would deal with the danger posed by Isaac Chansa, who has started the season in fine form.

And with Moeneeb "Slim Kat" Josephs also being hard to beat these days, Stars have a fight on their hands. Mweene is not intimidated by his compatriot Chansa though, insisting on their ability to handle themselves.

And with several players leaving the club, including Duncan "King" Lechesa, who retired, it falls on the shoulders of men like Mweene to maintain the dignity of the Free State-based side.

Mweene said: "They have adjusted well and they are hard workers. It is like they were born to play for Free State Stars. But I have been at this club for a while and I have Duncan to thank for providing a good foundation.

"As a result, we are a real team and there is no individuality. That is how we will approach the match tonight," said the gifted shot-stopper. The game kicks off at 8pm.

It is good for soccer that most players (FS captain included) are these confident of a win.Gone are the days where they felt inferior. It is good for soccer that everybody thinks he can do it
