Kaizer Chief's focus is Soweto Derby

Sep 8, 2010 | Kgomotso Sethusha | 39 comments

MINDFUL of the looming Soweto derby, Kaizer Chiefs' Vladimir Vermezovic might be compelled to rethink his priorities when the Premiership campaign resumes tonight.

Vermezovic guides his side against Maritzburg United in his first Premiership away fixture at Harry Gwala Stadium tonight. Kickoff is at 7.30pm.

But while the importance of winning the league championship cannot be overstated at Naturena, common sense would tell Vermezovic to make the looming MTN8 battle against Orlando Pirates at Soccer City on Saturday his priority.

Ticket sales for the Soweto derby stood at 32,000 at close of business yesterday.

Back to tonight's game, it will be interesting to see how this clash pans out, which is also important as the coach will be looking to maintain the team's momentum.

Victory against United, whom they hammered 3-0 in their corresponding fixture last season, would also prove a source of inspiration going into the Saturday's semifinal powder keg.

But it might come at a price, as players are predisposed to picking up injuries and suspensions early in the season.

Yet Vermezovic has assembled a team who appear to be riding the crest of the wave. While United stuttered to a 3-2 loss at AmaZulu, a fortnight ago, Chiefs got their campaign off to a bright start with a 2-0 win at Lamontville Golden Arrows.

And though it's still early days, United can't be expected to offer resistance to a confident Chiefs side, which is yet to lose a match this season. Apart from Valery Nahayo, who missed training on Monday and whose whereabouts are apparently unknown, Vermezovic will have a full squad.

The good news, though, is that marksman Knowledge Musona joined his teammates in training yesterday from national duty with Zimbabwe at the weekend.

United coach Ernst Middendorp also has reason to be optimistic after good news about the full recovery from injuries of midfielders Kurt Lentjies and Felix Obada and Namibian striker Rudolf Bester. Against Chiefs, Middendorp will always have a burning desire to get the better of his former employers.
