Oscar Ntwagae honoured

Sep 3, 2010 | Mogomotsi Selebi | 5 comments

EVEN in death Oscar "Oskido" Ntwagae remains the giant he was both on and off the field. Ntwagae received a moving tribute at his memorial service in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni, yesterday.

The hard-tackling defender of Mamelodi Sundowns and Platinum Stars died in Germiston last Friday after he was hit by a car.

Though the mood was sombre, the programme director appealed for Ntwagae's life, cut short at only 33 years, to be celebrated. That much became clear when those present broke into song and vuvuzelas blared.

Representatives from two of his former clubs - Mamelodi Sundowns and Platinum Stars - were present. Downs were represented Alex Shakoane, Alex Bapela and Harris Chueu, while Obed Legobate and Stanley Kgatla were present for Stars.

Interestingly, these two teams will play each other in their next league game in Rustenburg next week on Wednesday.

Moloto painted a picture of a special person: "I played with his father at Moroka Swallows back in 1982, but Oscar had something special that neither myself nor his father had. In a season he would give you a number of goals, and that was very special for a defender," Moloto said.

He added that Ntwagae was a doting father.

"What we realised was that he was a very loving father to his son (Ofentse) and it was good because as football people we sometimes forget what's most special to us."

Former teammate Hareaipha "Simba" Marumo said Ntwagae was not only a good player, but a good singer too. "I used to call him Mahlathini because he was that gifted."

Fans from Kaizer Chiefs, Swallows, Orlando Pirates and Bloemfontein Celtic also attended the service.

May his soul rest in peace and God forgive all his sins. Death to us is Victory, because when we cross to the other side of the river Jordaan, there is ertenal life, these words were spoken by the Apostle Paul!!
