Lebese waits in the wings
HAD Siphiwe "Shabba" Tshabalala's European move materialised, it would likely have opened doors for George Lebese to stake his claim for a spot in in Kaizer Chiefs' starting line-up.
But now that the 2010 World Cup star is staying put at Naturena, Lebese might have to wait a little longer to finally command a regular place in the team.
The Mamelodi-born midfielder showed promise whenever he was given a run by coach Vladimir Vermezovic, until a groin injury kept him out of the side.
Having recently rejoined his teammates after four months on the sidelines, Lebese said he had put the disappointment behind him and was ready to start over.
"It was really disappointing to suffer that injury because it meant I had to start all over again. The coach had shown faith in me so it was really bad for me to be out of action for such a long time.
"But the coach has been encouraging me and I was really encouraged by his words of support," Lebese said.
He was ready to launch Chiefs' attacks out wide with another exciting winger, Mandla Masango, who operates from the right.
But now that Tshabalala is no longer going overseas, Lebese will once again have to fight it out with the experienced winger for a place in the team.
Lebese said he was not bothered about the competition with Shabba.
"When I heard Shabba was staying put, it was really no problem for me. Indeed, I would love to play, but I also saw it as an opportunity for me to keep learning from him.
"He is always willing to give advice and his being here will benefit me," Lebese said.
