BOXING stalwart and trainer Josiah Mosia, who honed the skills of fighters at his famous Mapetla Boxing Club in Soweto, has died.

He succumbed to a long illness on Sunday. He was 85.

His assistant trainer, David Rabotapi, said poor health had forced Mosia to retire three years ago.

Some of the celebrated fighters he had trained include the Mohloai brothers, Samson and Morris, and Lybo Nkoko.

Samson was the Transvaal middleweight champion while Morris held the Transvaal and South African middleweight and Transvaal junior middleweight belts.

Nkoko was the national bantamweight champion. Rabotapi said Mosia will be buried at the Avalon Cemetery in Soweto on Sunday.

The service will be held at the Assemblies of God Church in Moletsane from 7am.

The cortège will leave for the cemetery at 9am. Mosia is survived by his wife, four children and three grandchildren.
