Sports personalities salute Madiba

SOUTH African sports personalties have joined those wishing Madiba a happy 92nd birthday on Sunday.

SOUTH African sports personalties have joined those wishing Madiba a happy 92nd birthday on Sunday.

Orlando Pirates boss Irvin Khoza said it was good that Madiba's birthday was celebrated to say thank you for his immense contribution to global peace and freedom.

"Clearly, God brought Madiba to life to benefit humanity. I'm happy Madiba lived to see the 2010 Fifa World Cup taking place in South Africa - another milestone to prove that his struggle for the liberation of our country was not in vain.

"I particularly wish Madiba good health as he soldiers on in life. We would like to wish Madiba a happy birthday and many more years to come.

"We must support the 67 minutes call to volunteer in our areas," Khoza said.

South African Football Association president Kirsten Nematandani said: "All of us must put aside 67 minutes on Sunday to do community work.

"In support of Madiba Day we must reconcile with all the people we have differences with. We must also work together as a nation."

Former Athletics South Africa president Leonard Chuene said: "We would like to thank Madiba for helping liberate our country and fighting for human rights globally.

"One of the big things Madiba did for us was to bring the first World Cup to Africa, a fact that was confirmed by Fifa president Sepp Blatter on Monday."

Confederation of African Football deputy president Molefi Oliphant said: "We say halala to Madiba. I worked with him and other leaders during the World Cup bidding process.

"He is always such a wonderful person, ever smiling and you always learn a lot when he is around, especially around helping the needy."
