POLICE at Durban harbour have intercepted a container carrying contraband valued at about R60million.
The container, which was intercepted yesterday at noon, contained thousands of fake Springbok jerseys, Levi's jeans, Bafana jerseys and Minora blades.
Port police said they believed the smuggling of Springbok jerseys would replace the hugely popular Bafana jerseys now that the Tri-Nations rugby tournament was in full swing.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Vincent Mdunge said the port police were acting on a tip-off when they discovered the cargo.
The fakes were hidden behind rolls of sellotape and tightly wrapped in sacks. More than 6000 containers pass through the Durban harbour daily. In June, counterfeit Bafana jerseys worth R26million were confiscated at the harbour. - Corrinne Louw
