Rotten lawyers

WE are accustomed to minibus taxis touting for commuters in the townships.

WE are accustomed to minibus taxis touting for commuters in the townships.

We are also used to hawkers in the local and mainline trains selling their wares.

And the Collins Concise dictionary describes to tout as follows: to solicit business or customers or to hawk merchandise in a brazen way or in public places.

So, it was with shock when it was reported that an attorney was seen touting at a police station. His customers? Detainees and suspects.

The touting lawyer is alleged to have brought with him a receipt book and a laptop so that "clients" can do electronic bank transfers.

Witnesses say the scum fleeced those desperate for freedom to the tune of R30 000 in one evening.

It is also alleged that lawyers were in cahoots with officers at police stations and that officers were getting kickbacks.

What a shame.
