Mokoka presses on after exclusion from Nairobi

TOP runner Stephen Mokoka has opted to continue with his training programme after Athletics South Africa surprisingly shut the door on him for the African Senior Track and Field Championships that will take place in Nairobi, Kenya.

TOP runner Stephen Mokoka has opted to continue with his training programme after Athletics South Africa surprisingly shut the door on him for the African Senior Track and Field Championships that will take place in Nairobi, Kenya.

"I was shocked that my name was initially in the team to the championships in Nairobi, Kenya, later this month, but it has been removed," Mokoka said yesterday.

Mokoka has been in devastating form this season, winning almost all the track and road running events. A sports administration student at the Tshwane University of Technology, Mokoka qualified for the Nairobi event after winning the 1500m and 5000m at the national championships.

"I have been training hard for the continental competition in Nairobi. From the look of things, it is also all over for me to go to the Commonwealth Games in India in October, but I will continue with my training programme," said Mokoka, whose exclusion from the Kenya-bound team has also surprised internationally renowned runner Hendrick Ramaala.

"I still can't believe that Stephen is not in the team. For me he was one of our medal hopefuls in Kenya with the likes of Mbulaeni Mulaudzi and Khotso Mokoena."

ASA deputy administrator Richard Stander refused to comment yesterday.

Instead, he accused Sowetan of being against the interim administration of ASA.

"You have been writing your own things, so it does not really matter for me to comment," he said.

Stander has come under a barrage of criticism from athletes who believe they have been treated with disdain by the ASA interim leaders.
