Constable Irvin Mabuye, 34, who was attached to the Hazyview police station, allegedly had an argument with his wife in their bedroom at Nyongane Trust. Mabuye allegedly ordered her out into the passage at gunpoint at 4am.
While in the passage Mabuye allegedly woke up his two sons from their bedroom and also ordered them into the passage.
"He ordered them to stand in the passage next to his wife. He had his service pistol in his hand. His wife managed to run away and lock herself in the main bedroom. Mabuye then shot himself in front of his children," Mpumalanga police spokesperson Captain Leonard Hlathi said.
Hlathi said the children were receiving counselling "for them to cope with the horrific scenario".
He said police members who worked with Mabuye were also receiving counselling.
He said provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Thulani Ntobela pleaded with members of the police not to resort to suicide.
"The commissioner said should there be a misunderstanding between police and their spouses or family members, they should contact their station commissioners so that the necessary referrals to skilled professional officials can be done," Hlati said.
"Committing suicide will not solve the problem. As police management we are shocked."
