A surprise carnival parade wound its way through the streets of Durban and ended at the World Cup host city's beachfront .
The KwaZulu-Natal province joined hands with eThekwini municipality to put up the colourful carnival.
The spectacle included drum majorettes, models' bodies painted in the colours of the flags of the 32 World Cup teams, floats bearing the coats of arms of competing nations, a brass band and dancers from various countries.
Traffic came to astandstill as the parade wound through the city streets and ended at the beachfront Fan Park.
Added attractions included roving jugglers, while a heritage float featuring such greats as Nelson Mandela, Winston Churchill, Mahatma Gandhi and Chief Albert Luthuli thrilled throngs of onlookers.
Provincial and city leaders also congratulated the province and its people for being fabulous hosts during the entire World Cup.
eThekwini deputy mayor Logie Naidoo said the carnival was their way of saying thank you to the people of KwaZulu-Natal for their excellent behaviour and being wonderful hosts.
"This is the climax of a successful 2010 World Cup," KwaZulu- Natal Premier Zweli Mkhize told Sowetan.
