THREE South African Social Security Agency employees appeared briefly in the Umbumbulu magistrate's court in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday on charges of corruption and fraud.

Nokuthula Sibisi 33, Luleka Maphalala 47, and Bongeka Yvonne Hlela were arrested on Tuesday afternoon for allegedly defrauding the social development department of millions of rands through a scam.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge said the Durban commercial crime unit in conjunction with social development MEC Meshack Radebe's office began investigations in Ulundi, where a number of employees and officials were arrested.

Mdunge said the three allegedly collected IDs from unsuspecting owners in rural areas and process applications on their behalf. They would then channel the money into their own bank accounts.

The three were released on R1000 bail each and the case was postponed to September 6.
