THE 5th Annual National Marimba Festival is back again this year to expose those who can create magic with this African instrument.
The three-day festival will take place at St Dominic's School in Boksburg on August 7, 8 and 9.
Marimba is fast becoming synonymous with Africa as the instrument that best captures the sound of the continent. The upcoming festival will give the talented musicians a chance to shine with the instruments.
The National Marimba Festival has various sections which attracts marimba players from all over South Africa and beyond.
It allows band members and individuals to show off their extraordinary instrumental skills.
Like previous years, there will be an array of workshops offered during the festival. These include workshops on African dance and djembe drumming, and many others that also allow guests to learn how to play the marimba and take part in the festival.
About 45 bands are taking part in this year's festival. The bands come as far as KwaZulu-Natal, East London, North West, Limpopo and even Swaziland.
Acclaimed adjudicators, including Alex Jacobowitz from Germany as well as marimba and music teacher Alport Mhlanga from Botswana, will make the final call on who are the best marimba bands for 2010.
The National Marimba Festival is organised by Marimba Education Foundation with the help of various partners.
The foundation was formed with the aim of getting children off the streetsand placing them in band rooms to make music instead.
Since its inception, the foundation has opened 12 marimba schools, eight of them sponsored by The National Lotto Distribution Trust Fund and four by The National Heritage Council.
Bands from these schools will also be taking part in the festival.
