SOMALIAN hip-hop artist K'naan received a "waving flag" welcome when he arrived to perform at the Fifa Fan Fest at New Beach on Durban's popular Golden Mile ahead of the Netherlands and Uruguay kickoff on Tuesday night.
K'naan's Waving Flag song, one of the World Cup theme songs, has topped charts worldwide. The Somali-born artist congratulated South Africa on hosting an "outstanding and excellent" first African World Cup.
"The first African World Cup has erased the tainted image people had of our continent," he said.
"South Africa has shown that the image of malnourished kids, crime and extreme poverty are incorrect. People are happy to be here and can see our beauty and diversity."
His anthem, chosen by Coca-Cola for its World Cup trophy tour, has catapulted the singer to global stardom.
Fans were left begging for more when the energetic performer showcased the talent that music critics have described as "a sound that fuses Bob Marley, conscious American hip-hop and brilliant protest poetry''.
"It's so exciting to be part of this epic journey and see Africa's excitement for the World Cup first-hand.''
He said he had been amazed by the response his song received.
"It is a song of hope and speaks to the people from all walks of life. The message in the song is that of hope and inspiration and the struggle of the people of Africa. I have been amazed to hear kids in Soweto singing along to it."
