Community members found the dead child in the open veld in Ivory Park on Tuesday night and alerted the police, said Constable Neldah Hlase.
"Part of the baby was allegedly already eaten by rats," he said.
The 26-year-old mother said that the baby suffered from malnutrition and had died on Saturday night.
"She says she threw the baby away because she had no other option as she had no money to bury the baby," Hlase said. - Sapa
