A fine project

IT IS common knowledge that the country's public healthcare sector needs as many hands on deck as possible to tackle the perennial problem of poor service delivery due to a shortage of doctors, especially among rural communities.

The problem has always been more acute in rural areas where, because of newly qualified doctors' reluctance to be placed in far-flung areas, public hospitals face a serious shortage of resources.

But government intervention through the South Africa-Cuba medical training programme is gradually reversing the trend by insisting that doctors who qualify under the project be placed in rural settings.

This week, 40 medical students who trained in Cuba qualified under the programme, providing a ray of light to these poor communities. So far the programme has produced 246 students.

This is a fine project that will no doubt help jack up service delivery in the long term.
