IN VIEW of Judge Meyer Joffe's finding against Jackie Selebi, the time has arrived for the NPA to reinstate charges against former intelligence boss Mulangi Mphego, pictured.
He defeated the ends of justice by acquiring the dubious affidavit, which in essence cleared Selebi of any wrongdoing.
Why it is taking so long for charges to be brought after being struck off the roll on procedural grounds?
Time is of the essence for the wheels of justice to start rolling, unless political partisanship once again plays itself out at the expense of the rule of law, as is usually the case in any matter involving a high-profile politician linked to the ruling party.
Menzi Simelane is on record as saying that the NPA is not independent despite its independence being constitutionally entrenched. This creates the impression that he is executive minded and takes orders from the government.
Until justice is done by prosecuting Mphego because there is cogent evidence, then we have no reason to welcome the Selebi conviction.
We cannot have selective justice because that might lead to abuse of power driven by vengeance and insatiable prosecution for individual appeasement.
