Mjikijelwa thanks his mentor for success

DESPITE being good at mathematics at school, maskandi singer S'bongiseni Ngubane, pictured, had his mind set on earning a living as an entertainer.

Known as Mjikijelwa on the music scene, the singer says he knew from a young age that he belongs to the entertainment industry. After nine years in the industry he feels he chose the right path.

Hailing from KwaMaphumulo in KwaZulu-Natal, Ngubane has just released his second album, Sihlupheke Sonke.

"From a young age I knew that I would be a singer. Despite the fact that I was very clever in class I still did not see myself doing something else."

Ngubane says after completing his matric he decided to pursue his dream. Then he met the late Mgqumeni Khumalo, who was as passionate as he was about maskandi.

Now it has been proven beyond doubt that the duo were brought together by fate.

The singer plays the style known as ushameni, which appeals to young and old.

About the album he says: "I do everything myself from composing to arrangement. When I compose I try to be as current as I can.

"I do not want to relate something that is in the past or predict what is going to happen."

Ngubane credits his success to Khumalo, who showed him the ropes.

"Meeting him changed my life. When we met in 2001 I knew nothing about music."
