A 21-YEAR-OLD man was sentenced to 12 years in prison within weeks of robbing a visitor to the World Cup, North West police said yesterday.

The Spanish tourist had been staying at a guesthouse in Potchefstroom and on June 25 the cleaner assigned to his room entered to find his clothes all over the floor and a DStv decoder missing.

Police spokesperson Junior Metsi said a bundle of the tourist's clothes was found next to a nearby railway line the following day.

Later police spotted two people walking, one of them Martin Palmer, down Albert Luthuli Street carrying equipment and clothing, and stopped them for questioning. Both were arrested on suspicion of being in possession of stolen property and police took a TV set, shoes, a computer hard drive and coat hangers in for safekeeping.

They found that the items had been stolen from a house in the Bult area of Potchefstroom but also linked Palmer to the theft from the Spanish visitor.

The two will return to court tomorrow for the housebreaking and theft case at Bult and for being in possession of stolen property. - Sapa
