The former KwaZulu-Natal junior middleweight champion had intended to honour his protege Mlungisi "Killer Shark" Dlamini with a fight or two.
Dlamini died on January 29 after he was involved in a car accident in his home province of KwaZulu-Natal.
Dlamini was the IBO and WBF champion.
"I recruited and groomed Mlu. So I felt that I should make a come-back just to honour him," said Mbonambi.
Mbonambi made it clear that Mtya advised him to stick to honing the skills of young fighters. Mtya's concern was that Mbonambi had lost five fights consecutively since he drew with Stephan Trabant for the WBC Youth World middleweight title in Germany on December 8 in 2001.
Mbonambi (17 wins - 14 KOs, 10 losses and a draw) disappeared from boxing scenes after his first-round stoppage defeat by Robin Reid in the UK on November 29 2002. This former fighter from Mandini in KwaZulu-Natal will be remembered for spirited performance against Anthony van Niekerk and William "Dynamite" Gare.
Van Niekerk stopped him in the 10th-round for the South African middleweight belt on June 25 2006, while Gare punished him severely throughout their 12-rounder for the national junior middleweight strap on January 1 2001.
Currently Mbonambi, who turns 32 on October 10, is doing a commendable job of training young fighters at Esikhawini College, a stone's throw away from Dlamini's home.
Two of his eight boxers, Sbongiseni Dlamini and Senzo Mbambo, scored knockouts in Durban two weeks ago in a June 16 Youth Day celebrations tournament.
