THE PAC and Azapo are not playing their part in the new political dispensation.
I say this as I watch the splitting and disintegration of organisations that played a pivotal role in the liberation struggle.
Most senior comrades of the ANC left South Africa in the 60s and 70s, as did Saso and the Black Consciousness Movement members. They were recruited by and joined the ANC in exile.
This happened for a long time, especially after the 1976 student uprising. Popo Molefe, Terror Lekota, Ngoako Ramathlodi, to name a few, were all active members of Saso before they joined the ANC.
But the black consciousness organisations are in oblivion now due to the internal power struggle. The government does very little to recognise their heroes. Is there any major institution that has been named after Robert Sobukwe, Onkgopotse Tiro, Steven Biko, Muntu Myeza, Potlako Leballo, Strini Moodley, Zeph Mothopeng etc?
Why are these heroes not honoured? Did only ANC members fight for freedom? The noise that PAC is making to rename Human Rights Day to Sharpeville Day will fall on deaf ears because they are a minority and also because of fragmentation, which drastically reduces their ideas and influence.
It is true that most military victories were scored by MK, but Apla and Azanla also played a important role, which should be recognised.
These organisations should stop the internal fighting and play a meaningful role in shaping our country if they want to be taken seriously. Their role in the struggle should be recognised. History will judge us harshly if we keep quiet about this injustice.
