THE Independent Complaints Directorate is investigating a case in which police shot dead a suspected car hijacker in KaBokweni near White River at the weekend.

ICD spokesperson Moses Dlamini said they were investigating whether the killing of Bheki Mashego, 28, by police was justified.

"The police have the right to use deadly force in order to save their lives and those of others," he said.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Captain Leonard Hlathi said police received a tip-off about the whereabouts of a car that was reportedly stolen from the area.

"The police located the vehicle at Dwaleni Trust near KaBokweni and tried in vain to stop it as it was speeding. When the occupants saw the police they started shooting at them.

"The police retaliated and shot Mashego. The other three suspects ran away," Hlathi said.

Hlathi said several spent cartridges were found on the scene.

Last week a suspected car hijacker was also shot dead in KwaMhlanga near Witbank.
