Radio 2000 just keeps growing

WITH its exciting new programming, Radio 2000 is probably the country's fastest growing station.

WITH its exciting new programming, Radio 2000 is probably the country's fastest growing station.

Since the station was declared the SABC's official 2010 Fifa World Cup radio station three years ago, its listenership has grown faster than was anticipated.

It is a great feat for a station that had about 200000 listeners just two years ago.

The latest figures show that Radio 2000 has grown from 805000 listeners to 816000 in the past two months.

Station manager James Shikwambana explains: "We usually receive RAMS (radio audience measurement surveys) every two months and the latest figures show that we are growing.

"The secret of our success is the new programming that we have just introduced. People are very impressed."

More than that, Radio 2000 has started Fifa Fan Fest sites. The station's personnel visit various provinces just to interact with fans. Shikwambana says Fan Fests are run by Fifa.

"Since we are an official Fifa World Cup station these Fan Fest sites give us an opportunity to communicate with our local and international fans. These Fan Fest sites are not for locals only but also for tourists who are here for the World Cup," Shikwambana says.

The station's personnel has already visited Durban, Cape Town and Polokwane.

Shikwambana says they will wrap up their Fan Fest site visits with a trip to Bloemfontein today and tomorrow.

DJs Bertha Charuma and Ernest Pillay will broadcast live from the Mangaung Sport Centre in Bloemfontein.
