People or nations with such an attitude remain below average. Politicians and all South Africans gave whatever it took to ensure that we host the World Cup.
About 185000 people supported our soccer team in Sandton and more than 85000 spectators attended the opening match, breaking both the 2004 and 2006 World Cup opening records.
But Bafana Bafana drew in the opening game, which they should easily have won. Instead of constructively criticising the national squad, we sang their praises as if we had won the World Cup.
Our hollow praises led to the next game with Uruguay being the worst World Cup game so far. Still we refused to criticise the boys and said: "They played well against Mexico."
They could easily have won the battered and tattered French team with high margins , but they won 2-1 and did not qualify for the second round.
They failed to show any fire during the second half because they knew we were a country that settles for less and we would praise them anyway. And, indeed, we did just that.
We should truly start to take ourselves seriously and believe that we deserve victories and better lives, be it in politics, sports n and so on.
We should shun mediocrity and criticise all those who under-perform or do not commit to our country and our people.
Let's be a proud nation that does not settle for less and only then will the world take us seriously.
We have certainly hosted the best World Cup ever. Now let this boost our confidence and pride and push us to demand only the best.
