Smith defied the apartheid laws by settling with his family in Mamelodi in the 1980s. He became a much loved and trusted figure in the black township.
He was a former Dutch Reformed Church minister who left his church because it gave a religious and doctrinal justification for apartheid.
A memorial service will be held in Mamelodi West , Pretoria, today.
