Jobs worry

REPORTS about ongoing job losses are a matter of serious concern.

REPORTS about ongoing job losses are a matter of serious concern.

Data released by Statistics SA on Tuesday show that jobs in the formal, non-agricultural business sector decreased by 79000 or 1percent in the quarter ended March, to an estimated 8084million employees.

Of much concern is that the steepest decline was in the cyclical construction (10,2%) and trade (9,2%) sectors.

The dip in the construction sector is attributed to the completion of construction and infrastructure-related projects connected to the World Cup.

This is a blow to the government's job creation initiatives because infrastructure development has been punted as one sector where semi-skilled and unskilled jobs can be created.

It also raises the question of creating sustainable jobs for the low-skilled South African labour force.
