Schultz promises war to avenge defeat

FAINT-HEARTED boxing fans must stay away from the Wembley Arena, south of Johannesburg, when Michael Schultz challenges Tineyi Maridzo for the WBO Africa super middleweight title on July 1.

FAINT-HEARTED boxing fans must stay away from the Wembley Arena, south of Johannesburg, when Michael Schultz challenges Tineyi Maridzo for the WBO Africa super middleweight title on July 1.

Schultz spewed bile yesterday when he warned that bones will crack when he bids to avenge the third-round stoppage by his Zimbabwean foe at the same venue in November.

"It's personal," said the intimidating Schultz at the media briefing at Durandt Boxing World Gym in Johannesburg.

Maridzo knocked out Schultz with a straight right which appeared to have landed behind his ear.

Such blows are unofficial.

"This guy will never beat me twice, never," said the heavily tattooed and burly Schultz . "I'm prepared to die fighting on July 1 to redeem myself."

Trainer Nick Durandt chipped in: "Maridzo would never win the Lottery twice. Maridzo and boxing fans will see a different Schultz this time round," Durandt said.

Schultz made up for his November defeat with a third-round stoppage of Goodman Dywili in March. That was his 10th stoppage from 15 wins against two draws and a single loss.

The rematch will top a six-bout programme, jointly promoted by Durandt Boxing World and Pat Molefe's Rainbow Promotions.

The entire tournament will be bankrolled by Neo Africa but it will not enjoy coverage from the SABC and SuperSport.

Durandt's other charges, Daniel Bruwer and Jared Silverman, have also vowed to eat Sean Santana and Emmanuel Duma alive in their non-title fights.

"I'm going in there for a knockout," warned Bruwer, who boasts 17 stoppages from 20 wins with one defeat.

Silverman, 20, a matriculant, lost his first professional fight to Oupa Maimane last month. The fight attracted about 500 fans, mostly his schoolmates.

Michael van Heerden faces Michael Sangweni and Welcome Ntshingila engages Pius Dipheko in the junior middleweight fights, while Ryno Liebenberg tackles Caster Ndou in the light heavyweight in another non-title fight on the day.

Tickets are available at Durandt's gym in Norwood at R150 and R100.
