ANC will not charge Vavi

THE ANC has backed down from charging Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi, but the ruling party says it is giving him "a long rope".

THE ANC has backed down from charging Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi, but the ruling party says it is giving him "a long rope".

ANC general secretary Gwede Mantashe yesterday said though Vavi had gone too far by accusing some Cabinet ministers of corruption, the party had decided not to charge him.

"In dealing with this alien behaviour, charging comrade Vavi will not be the best route to take. This is a political problem that must be addressed as such," Mantashe said.

He said the ANC's national working committee debated Vavi's allegations that the ministers of Communication Siphiwe Nyanda and Provincial and Local Government Sicelo Shiceka were allegedly corrupt.

Reports of the intended action leaked to the media, causing Cosatu to react angrily. The trade union federation threatened to challenge the ANC's decision.
